Title

Restoration of Shipboard Life in the Goryeo Period

Description

This study aims at understanding the characteristics of an ancient ship as a residence that moves independently,
and preparing basic data for life on ship accordingly. First of all, the excavation location of daily artifacts on ships
were classified and reviewed according to Goryeo shipwrecks recovered with shipboard artifacts . As a result, the
composition of artifacts in the bottom center space identical to the views of previous studies was confirmed.
However, there were ships with uncertain remaining conditions and records, and in the case of some artifacts such
as combs, the location is sporadic and there are few cases, so it is difficult to determine the location of the
excavation. Daily artifacts on ships show a high proportion of batch artifacts, but there is a limitation in that the
absolute number of artifacts in the water is limited. Therefore, in addition to conducting a comparative study, we
tried to prepare a basis for the composition of space and artifacts. As for the basis of the living space on ships, a
comparison was made between Joseon Dynasty and modern ships. The basis for the composition of artifacts in the
space in the center of the ship bottom was sought through comparison of land artifacts of the same period. As a
result of comparison with later ships, it seems that until the extinction of modern ships, the space in the center of
the bottom was located in the third compartment based on the bow. However, we cannot know the exact time, but
when it comes to modern ships after Mado no. 4, there is a difference in that the center space of the ship is changed
from the front of the mast to its back. As a result of the comparison to the selected cooking space of daily remains
on land, there were fewer distinct examples of artifacts in the cooking area of land living remains than underwater
remains. We indicate the importance of a linked study rather than an isolated study of the land and underwater
artifacts.
