He worked as the State Maritime Archaeologist in Victoria, as Curator of Maritime Archaeology at the Australian National Maritime Museum and as an academic at Flinders University where he established the Maritime Archaeology Program (MAPO). He served as Deputy Chair and later Chair of the Advisory Council on Underwater Archaeology (ACUA) and spent more than a decade serving on the ICOMOS International Committee on the Underwater Cultural Heritage (ICUCH).
